Clean Vibes was the partner for the Beyond The Valley Festival 2023 event, providing effective cleaning services for over 35,000 attendees. Together with event managers, we’ve successfully set the standard for festival sustainability.

Overview

Beyond The Valley is a five-day camping festival held over the New Year’s Eve holidays at Barunah Plains, offering a unique and immersive festival experience in Victoria, Australia.

In 2023, Clean Vibes was selected as the partner for Beyond The Valley’s waste management partner, to significantly reduce waste sent to landfill.

Clean Vibes was tasked with delivering event cleaning services, waste management services and resource recovery for the festival. Our primary goal was to enhance the festival's sustainability by implementing effective waste management strategies.

Solution

Clean Vibes' waste management approach to Beyond The Valley 2023 included:

1. Pre-Event Planning: Developing a detailed action plan focused on waste reduction, recycling, and maintaining clean facilities throughout the festival.
2. On-Site Waste Management: Placing separate bins for general waste, recycling, and organics inside the venue and outdoor areas to ensure the event stayed clean at all times.
3. Continuous Cleaning: Our team of over 200 cleaners operated 24/7 during the festival, ensuring the entire venue was cleaned before attendees arrived each day, as well as before the start and end of each day, and after every event.
4. Reusable Cup Operations: In 2023, Clean Vibes provided staffing and supervision for the TURN system reusable cup operations at Beyond The Valley. The TURN system includes reusable cups, collection bins, and mobile washing systems. A single reusable TURN cup has the potential to displace up to 100 single-use cups and can break even on its environmental impact in as few as three uses. This initiative significantly reduced single-use plastic waste and enhanced the festival’s sustainability efforts.
5. Sorting and Recycling: Staff sorted waste at a compound located at the back of the venue to ensure proper disposal and recycling of materials. This involved separating recyclable items from general waste to maximise recycling efficiency.

Challenge

One of the main challenges was educating attendees about proper waste disposal. Not everyone knew what was recyclable or paid attention to which bin they used. To address this, Clean Vibes stationed staff at the waste sorting compound to oversee and correct waste disposal practices.

Outcome and Key Accomplishments

Clean Vibes achieved significant sustainability milestones at Beyond The Valley 2023:

• Waste Diversion Rate: Successfully recycled, up-cycled, and diverted 59% of all waste onsite from landfills.
• Reusable Cup Success: Implemented the TURN reusable cup system, significantly reducing single-use plastic waste.
• Community Engagement: Engaged numerous cleaners from local communities, operating around the clock to maintain cleanliness.
• Attendance: Provided services for 35,000 attendees during the five-day festival.
