Overview

Vivid Sydney 2024, held from May 24 to June 15, is Australia’s largest festival of light, music, and ideas, drawing millions of visitors from across the world. Iconic Sydney locations such as Circular Quay, The Rocks, and Darling Harbour came alive with awe-inspiring light installations, music performances, and thought-provoking talks.

With over 2.5 million attendees this year, maintaining the cleanliness of the venues and supporting sustainability goals were critical to the festival’s success. Clean Vibes, a trusted partner for Vivid Sydney for several years, was once again chosen to implement an effective event waste management plan and carry out cleaning services throughout the event.

Solution

Clean Vibes approached Vivid Sydney 2024 with a holistic event waste management plan that ensured the venues were spotless at every stage—during bump-in, throughout the event, and during bump-out. Before the festival kicked off, our team assisted with the setup by efficiently managing waste generated during the construction of installations and preparing the spaces for attendees. We deployed cleaners across all locations to work around the clock during the event, ensuring every venue stayed pristine, even during peak hours of visitor traffic.

Throughout the festival, we managed waste streams by placing clearly marked bins for general waste, recycling, and CDS containers, helping attendees dispose of waste correctly. This not only kept the venues clean but also supported the event's environmental goals by diverting significant amounts of waste from landfills. At the close of each night, our teams conducted thorough cleanups, ensuring the venues were ready for the next day’s activities. During bump-out, Clean Vibes oversaw the efficient breakdown of installations, managing the removal and sorting of materials to leave the venues as clean as when the event began.

In addition to cleaning, Clean Vibes provided on-the-ground support with educational initiatives, promoting correct waste disposal behaviours among festival-goers. Our team of cleaners not only maintained high cleanliness standards but also engaged in active recycling, ensuring Vivid Sydney met its sustainability targets in waste management.

The sustainable waste management efforts at Vivid Sydney 2024 yielded the following results:

• Waste Diversion Rate: Achieved a 72% waste diversion rate, significantly reducing the amount of waste sent to landfills.
• CDS Containers: Successfully diverted 7,738 eligible CDS containers from landfills, contributing to the circular economy and recycling initiatives.
• Community Impact: Engaged 18 local community members as cleaners, ensuring economic benefits and job creation within the local area.
